Los Angeles shoegaze/noise pop music artists The Meeting Places recently announced a new EP release titled “You and I” scheduled for May 24th. Its their first in over 10 years. Formed in 2001, the four shared interest in bands like Spacemen 3, My Bloody Valentine and Ride, and soon developed a cohesiveness and expansive signature sound that led to the band’s debut album, Find Yourself Along the Way (Words On Music, 2003), recorded at The Ship studios with The Breeders and Elliott Smith producer Aaron Espinoza. The album appeared on the Top Albums of 2003 lists of several publications around the world, with critics noting the record’s crafty juxtaposition of noise-pop, atmospheric rock and tunefulness.
Their sophomore album Numbered Days, produced by Grandaddy’s Jim Fairchild, was released worldwide by Words On Music in October 2006 and earned excellent reviews on publications like Spin, Pop Matters, All Music among others.
Then came the apparent recording hiatus. While they performed live at San Francisco’s Noise-Pop Festival, SXSW, and shows in Taipei, Taiwan – sharing the stage with fellow luminaries Chapterhouse, Ulrich Schnauss, 18th Dye, American Analog Set, Film School and Nightmare Air – it wasn’t until 2017 when they started playing select Los Angeles venues while working on brand new material.
The band explains, “It’s difficult juggling marriage, kids, careers and being in a band who is creating original music. Getting together to play definitely took a back seat to other aspects of life. We’d still try play a show every once in a while and recorded a few songs during the span between the last full length and this EP, one of which “Millions” is a staple in our live set. We were fortunate and had the opportunity to play a show in Taiwan during that time, which was a fun experience. I think we’re a band that needs deadlines or else, we can obviously let time slip away, which hopefully won’t happen with future releases.”
That said, the Meeting Places had success elsewhere, as it was featured on TV shows and streaming services, including Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill and Season 2 of Judd Apatow’s Netflix show LOVE.
Any fans of those TV shows curious if they have new music, its safe to say they do now. With “You and I” , expect The Meeting Places to pick up where they left off, combining catchy, melodic indie-pop with layered shoegazey guitars and upbeat, poppy rhythm patterns.
The quartet’s first new release in over a decade will be out on 24th May 2019 through Saint Marie Records.
