Drum and Lace have been one of my favorite personal discoveries of 2019. Although in existence for a while, it was the performance at Moogfest 2019 that caught my attention, which was amongst the highlights of the 15th-anniversary festival. Currently, Drum and Lace have an upcoming EP of choral electronic tracks titled “semi songs” and it’s set for release Friday, July 19th. It’s her ninth overall (including EPs and singles) under the Drum and Lace moniker. For the new EP, Drum & Lace also has a Los Angeles record release show July 18 at The Bootleg Theater Stage.
For those unfamiliar, Drum and Lace was created in 2013 by Italian composer and performer Sofia Hultquist as an outlet for her combination of fashion and music fashion composition. This apparently led to work writing for film, tv, dance, theater, fashion, and commercials. Her film scoring credits include fashion documentary “The First Monday in May” (dir Andrew Rossi), HBO documentary “At The Heart of Gold- Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal” (dir. Erin Lee Carr), and upcoming AppleTV+ series “Dickinson” (created by Alena Smith). As Drum and Lace, her first release wouldn’t be until 2016’s “Dark Nights and Neon Nights”, an EP of trip-hop influences.
For this release, expect a departure from the previous releases. Drawing from her personal life and experiences, the sound of “semi songs” lives somewhere in the middle of Drum & Lace’s body of work- somewhere between a film score and an electronic release.
“semi songs” is written, performed and produced by Drum & Lace with violin, two cellos, piano and electronics, and was composed over the course of a few months between the end of 2017 and beginning of early 2018.
